The most common photo sizes
Choose a document to create the photo in exactly that size. The digital file has the pixel size the online form expects.

35 × 45 mm
The format used for Schengen visas, UK passports, Indian passports, UAE visas and many more. On a 35 × 45 mm photo the head (chin to crown) is usually about 32–36 mm tall; the UK asks for 29–34 mm.
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm)
The square US format for passports and visas. For online applications such as the DS-160 the digital file must be square and at least 600 × 600 pixels.
Digital file vs printed photo
Many applications now take an upload instead of a print. You get both: the digital file at the exact pixel size, and a 4 × 6 in print sheet with several copies that any photo lab can print. Print it at 100 % (“actual size”), not “fit to page”.
